Grocery Store Check Out Etiquette - Supermarket Shopping
84Supermarket Shopping
Once you are behind the wheels of a trolley inside your supermarket do you consider yourself a good shopper , considerate of others around you as you race up and down the aisles or maybe wander slowly or are you an aggressive type when it comes to making sure you get your way no matter what happens while shopping + at the checkout wherever you are in the world ? .
Many people are considerate while shopping to other shoppers as well as the checkout operators as well as everywhere else they spend their time .
They have their money or card out ready to pay at the grocery store checkout, go to the appropriate aisle for the shopping they have done, empty their basket out and are friendly and polite not talking on their phone the whole time .
Some people seem to lose their manners as well as their sense of humour once they get into shopping mode so they need reminding to be considerate of others as well as the checkout operator .
Here are some of the top things to do while in a supermarket to ensure you would win a prize for the most dreaded shopper in town or the city you live in !
Top 10 worst shopper habbits - No 1
One of the things you can do to frustrate other shoppers and the check out operators is to act like the Aisle 12 items or less apply to everyone but you .
Saying " but I only have 13 - 14 items makes you look silly - Can't you count to 12 ? Last time we counted 13 was above 12 not below it
Saying " I have 20 cans of cat food but they are the same brand so that is only 1 item makes you look desperate and pushy to everyone.
We still have to spend time moving them etc.
How do you personally feel when you only have 1- 2 items and are in a hurry & you see someone emptying out a basket of 20 or items onto the 12 items or less checkout then see them run off for another handful of goods , ask for prepaid phone credit..........
You say the checkout operator is not busy so feel you have the right to empty your trolley out onto the 12 item or less Aisle - While you are being served elsewhere where they are waiting for you they could have served up to 10 customers with 1- 12 items.
No 2- grocery store checkout
Are you really that starving and desperate that you cannot survive a short shopping trip before having to start eating the food or having a drink before you get to the checkout ? What are you teaching the children when they see you eating and drinking products that you haven't yet purchased
I am stunned by the amount of people that think this is acceptable behaviour and encourage their children to do the same .
If you know you or your child will need to have something during a shopping trip why not bring your own like I have seen some mothers do .
What will you do if you get to the checkout & find you have left your card/wallet behind & cannot pay for the item you have eaten or drank ?
That happens more often than you would expect . Would you like to be held up while the manager is called because you cannot pay for something you ate that you hadn't paid for ?
No 3-grocery store checkout -basket etiquette grocery store :
Are you really that lazy that you cannot empty your basket out onto the counter , or if you have loaded up a freezer bag in the shop why not empty it while waiting especially if you have joined the queue knowing that you should be in another aisle.
Most men & elderly people do empty their basket . A lot of checkout operators are short so it is harder having to reach into it & slows them up trying to empty your basket.
If you really want to keep the line flowing get your shopping ready out of the basket to be scanned & keep the line flowing.
Also do not abandon your basket in the middle of an aisle while you go grab an unforgotton item .
It makes it very difficult for those with a trolley to keep the lines flowing as they struggle to manouver around your basket .

Have your cards/ or cash ready for use rather than have to dig them out of the bottom of your bag holding everyone up or worse still they are out in the car .
A lot of time is spent by staff returning food back to the shelves when people have left their wallets at home .
No 5
Make sure you have what you want to buy before you reach the checkout rather than dashing off all the time making everyone wait for you or pay for what you have & get back in line if it is busy .
Fortunately checkout operators can postpone your sale if you are taking too long and you wait at the end of the line when you are ready to continue.
No 6
It is handy to use up your loose change so as to lighten your wallet or pocket but please count it out yourself and make sure you have the right amount then put it into their hand rather than make them pick up $$$$ worth of change off the bench and keep everyone waiting.
No 7
Please don't be on talking on your phone while going through the checkout and totally ignore the checkout operator , It is rude & makes it hard for them to do their job properly and efficiently .
No 8
If you decide that you can't buy a piece of meat or another cold item for any reason please put it back where it belongs so someone else can buy it without danger of it not being up to standard .
You might not care at the time yet you would be the first one to complain if it happened to you and you were sick as a dog having unpaid time off work or one of your children.
No 9
You might have a thing about plastic bags however if you are buying 4 or more - potatoes- oranges please think about the checkout operator who has to try get them to stay in place while weighing them for you.
Maybe you might consider putting them in a mushroom bag to hold them together.
Broccoli & other vegies make a mess on the checkout.
Meat is put into a bag as it often leaks juice out .
Chemicals are put seperate in case they break.
Bread is kept seperate so it doesn't get squashed !
No 10
Please keep in mind the checkout operator is trained to scan and pack fast .
If you want your reusable bags used please
Make sure your reusable bags are kept clean & not smelly .
Open the bags up for the checkout operator & put them at the end of the checkout for easy access.

I love this! I agree with you on all these points; the lack of courtesy and manners are sometimes almost comical to watch as I'm wondering who ever led these people to assume these actions are okay???
Wow that really sums up the shopping experience! Love how you wrote this, it makes you very aware of what's going on around you. My grocery shopping experience will never be the same again lol ;)
I used to live in Ecuador, where elderly women always felt entitled and would actually squeeze in behind the next customer to be served. This may make me sound like a jerk, but these ladies were very wealthy-looking, and in perfect health...no wheel-chairs or walkers. Because no one wanted to say "Excuse me, but the line ends over there" to an elderly woman, everyone would just grumble among themselves.
This is especially annoying when you've been waiting in line for 20 minutes and are in a bit of a rush!
Anyway, your hub just made me think of my grocery line pet peeve :)
You lost me as "check out chick". It is ironic because you hub is about etiquette yet you use chick one too many times.
I used to be a cashier at a hardware store and there's a big one:
If you're buying a bulk item.. WRITE DOWN THE NUMBER!!!!!! There are pens right next to the bags, use them!
Don't give the cashier crap about typing in your credit card number in the computer. Sometimes the terminal doesn't work and it has to be done manually. I'm not entering your CC number in a database to be sent off to Nigerian princes.
Don't abandon your cart in the checkout lane. The cashier has to leave their register to move it and that involves logging out and holding everyone up.
Interesting hub, kind of inspires me to write a hub about being nice to a cashier!
I have to comment on this, because I use to be a cashier at my local Jewel for four years and kept thinking I need to get out of here. So, so many pet peeves, that I don't know that I can list them all here but in the end I do know that I had the best regular customers coming in my line.
I had a couple who's husband always wanted to come to me when they shopped because I was so nice to them. Then there was the gentleman that shopped in the wheelchair, had his fishing hat on and always snapped when asked if he wanted stamps, etc. "If I wanted stamps, I'd ask for them".....I got the drift and if he happened to come in my line again the following week, I wouldn't ask a thing.
It was only "Hello, Sir..how are you today" and "thanks for shopping Jewel"!!
I had a customer that forgot his wallet too, but instead of coming back with it, he left the store with his cart full of food, frozen and otherwise in my aisle. I felt so bad for the bagger that had to put it all back, even though I was left without him to bag for me.
I now work at Home Depot, and I get the regulars who are so willing to help with the lumber, picks up the heavy buckets of sealant, etc...very pleasant and respectful.
And, then there are those other contractors/customers that smell, chew on unlit cigars, bend over and that crack appears, or talking on cells throughout the entire transaction.
Talk about ignorant and rude, it's just terrible.
There's all sorts out there.....Melbel, you said it right with your comment about the crap they give us about credit cards and carts. Just the other day, had a customer cussing left and right that he couldn't sign his name and enter. Our pads could be temperamental at times but these men that think the harder they tap on the pad it's gonna work, well think again Mr. I thought he was going to break it at first.
Which reminds me, ever see how annoying people can be when they use the self-checkouts. About a year ago at Depot, there had been a guy who I guess was quite mad that nothing was scanning for him, and instead of asking for help he put his fist through the screen and cracked it.
My pet peeve is after the cashier hands my change or card back to me either they are the person behind me doesn't give me time to put my stuff back into my wallet/purse. I lose things easily and need to do it then and there!
people don't have patience these days.....i used to work in a supermarket when i was student...there was a lady in her late 30's was waiting in a queue it was really really busy and all checkouts were open...but she got so angry she thrown the basket on the checkout operator....saying you guys don't know your job.....i always have to wait here its ridiculous service..
so i request people to be patient as the person standing behind the counter is also human and have got self respect as well....they don't say anything to you because that's the part of there job...otherwise most of the people are capable of giving you a better reply.
Excellent tips! I am a considerate shopper and always prepared:)
Some great points FCA. As a worker in a large grocery store I have seen all the "top ten" and more. Together we could probably fill many pages. My favorite observation over the years would have to be how bad ,seemingly normal, people can act when they come to the store and how their friends and families wouldn't recognize their behavior. Some customers can be absolute bullies and tyrants when dealing with the staff. Most often without any provocation at all.
Customers would also get irrationally angry at the credit card terminal. When it came time to sign one person angrily stabbed the screen with the stylus.
If I'm ahead of you in line, please don't start loading your groceries onto the belt until I'm done putting my groceries on.
Two words: drunk people. In my location, alcohol can only be sold between 6am and 2am, and then only if you're sober. No you cannot buy it now, and I really don't want to see that and neither so the other customers.
Good points. I'm sure these can be very frustrating to cashiers. But manners are important on both sides of the register. I'm sure you are a great cashier. However, there are some who don't even speak or smile during the entire transaction. And many in convenience store won't even put down their cell phones to check out customers. Good hub!
I have worked in the supermarket industry since 1980 and can tell you frist hand you are right on. I think i will follow suit and write about some of my experiences. Thanks for the idea,Hope you don't mind.
Great post that reminds us about the importance of shopping etiquette, even if it's something as simple as grocery shopping. Voted up!
pointers for the cashiers:
when bagging my produce don't throw it in the bag
when I put similar items together to ring up dont put one item in each bag.
wipe off the thing if its dirty
know some of the items that are on sale or have a circular nearby
dont stare at the sizes of my clothes
put my soda and gum in a bag too
Great hub and so true. Manners are important wherever we go and indeed speak volumes about us and where we come from. Totally loved it, made me laugh as well.
I wish those clueless shoppers would read your hub. I'm not going to get too self-righteous though, because I've been guilty of some of these bad habits at one time or another. Thanks for writing the hub. Voting it Up and Useful.
Enjoyed your hub. I'm sure cashiers appreciate your tips. I notice people going through the "12 or less item" checkout more than anything else. Guess they can't read. Some stores prefer you not take the items out of the basket and so a customer is left to guess... maybe that should be posted. Thanks for the info.
Cute hub. I can relate and I admit sometimes with my three boys I go to the express lane with two extra items. We need a lane for families with young kids.
I agree with all the points you have made here. I find it especially annoying when people go through the express checkout with more than 12 items - it's just rude!
Oh man this is really cool. Some monners are needed to some shoppers. i use to work in suppermarket and i have seen many shoppers doing the same as you said here.
A good hub. I used to be on checkouts in my younger days and I enjoyed getting to know my regular customers. But everyone seemed to be much more polite back then, 40 years ago. So what happened ? Has the pace of life affected us all so that we have lost our manners. It is a 2 way thing and both need to learn to repect each other and other customers.
I unpack my trolly systematically, produce, meat, bread, detergents all seperately to make it easier to pack. My pet peeve is when I move my trolly and when I step back the next customer has mover right up so that I can't even get to the machine to swipe my card. Also when the person in front leaves their trolly in the aisle behind them while their shopping is being scanned and they are paying so that the next person is not able to empty their trolly onto the belt, then it is all rush.
Twice I have taken pic n mix and forgotten to write the number on the bag, so guilty there. Also guilt of filling with gas and then realised I didn't have my wallet, very embarrassing as I couldn't put it back. So always make a point of checking I have my wallt since then.
I enjoyed reading your hub.
Manners seem to be a thing of the past (with the teenagers and 20-30 yr olds), always in a hurry and can't let the person in front of them put their money away, on cells, etc., etc.
This morning at Target I only got two things but they were rather large and the girl was so fast that the next person was practically at my back. I turned around at the guy and said to him "really, can you get any closer". It was so unnecessary! I hate it when other customers have to be so close with their carts when their behind you, or breathing down your back when they don't have a cart.
@Rosemay50 - I do the same thing when I grocery shop and the feelings are mutual.
What a great hub Freecampingaussie!!!
Imagine all 10 happened at the same time across the checkouts. Supermarket from Hell!!!
I must be lucky as I very rarely come across any of this behaviour.
Cheers for an entertaining Hub feecampingaussie :-)
Wow! You hit the nail on the head! My number one pet peeve is when someone isn't ready with his/her check or card - especially when they forget where it is, and they have to search a gazillion pockets before finding it. There ought to be a law! Something like execution, or something. At least that's what I feel when it happens.
Loved reading this hub, and how very true and real it all is! I always get stared and groaned at when shopping I have a large family so you can imagine how full my trolley is. I actually had a bloke comment on greed! We have 6 people in our house and it was just a weekly shop. Some people are just so rude!
Too funny....sums it all up pretty well. My pet peeve is when people insist on asking for their groceries to be packed in paper bags...they seem to take forever for the poor cashiers to load up. Bring your own bin or cloth bags please!

Love a good rant, but i couldnt agree more with you.
