What is a Pacemaker ?-Sex after a pacemaker

Can we still have sex often if I have a Pacemaker in place? Can we travel still as it is something we really enjoy??? When after having to place a pacemaker when can I resume travelling?

Have you recently or in the past suffered an unexpected heart attack & then been told you need a pacemaker afterwards to keep your heart beating so you can stay alive?

A pacemaker is a small device that's placed in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms this device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.

Having a pacemaker in can give you a new lease of life however for the first few months you will need to be careful & avoid doing things like putting out the washing or heavy lifting and so on.

It comes as a big shock not only to you but also the ones that love you, wife /husband, children, parent’s .l

We had just got engaged when Nev had his heart attack, The ambulance driver told us that Nev had stomach problems, it wasn't a heart attack so when I finally was able to see him in Intensive care with all the wires on him it came as a big shock when the nurses informed me that Neville had suffered a massive heart attack & had to be flown by helicopter to Randwick Hospital in Sydney.

While he was there he was told he also has asbestos on the lung, however, that's another story.

My Granddad had gone in for a pacemaker in1982? But he had another massive heart attack & died before they could operate so I was a mess.

However, the doctors assured me that technology was a lot more advanced & Neville should be OK.

My husband had a St Judes pacemaker defibrillator put in after his heart attack over a year ago now and is going well. Can we still have sex often if I have a Pacemaker in place? Pacemaker

How A Heart Attack & Pacemaker Affects your lifestyle

We are traveling Australia with a 4 wheel drive and caravan after Neville had his heart attack & the pacemaker put in a while back now.

It came as a shock to us like a lot of other people and took a long time to get used to having it as he can feel it.

It does get annoying at times especially when he bumps it accidentally while moving things.

He has a check up and pacemaker checked every year and is going well so far.

If you are doing research because you are going to be having a pacemaker put in then know you are not alone and there is a Pacemakers club you can join for support and have your questions answered by others who have been through the same thing as you.

We will take it slowly and enjoy the trip

You need to keep these things away from your pacemaker.

Cell phones and MP3 players (for example, iPods)

Household appliances, such as microwave ovens

High-tension wires

Metal detectors

Industrial welders

Electrical generators

These devices can disrupt the electrical signaling of your pacemaker and stop it from working properly. You may not be able to tell whether your pacemaker has been affected.

Neville found that his watch played up when it was on his arm closest to the pacemaker!

When we are going aboard a ship or a plane Nev has to avoid going through the screen we pass through and gets patted down instead.

Sorting Tablets for our trip

Tablets every Day without fail
Tablets every Day without fail

Tablets Every Day

After a heart attack there are a number of tablets you must take on a daily basis so I decided after a period of time when Nev would forget to take them that I would get up early , make us both a cup of tea , grab his tablets & enjoy a cuppa in bed .

As there are a lot of tablets to take Nev finds he copes better if he sorts about 2-3 weeks out at a time especially handy when going on a trip.

Beware of Ipods

Do you use an Ipod ?  A study of 83 patients conducted by Okemos High School student Jay Thayer and Dr. Krit Jongnarangsin, a University of Michigan cardiologist, found that having iPods even within 18 inches of a patient's chest could cause false telemetry readings and, in one instance, actually caused the pacemaker to fail.

Physical Activity with a pacemaker

The good thing is that even though Neville has a pacemaker won't it isn't stopping him from doing sports and exercise like snorkeling and biking including strenuous activities.

You may need to avoid full-contact sports, such as football. Such contact could damage your pacemaker or shake loose the wires in your heart. Ask your doctor how much and what kinds of physical activity are safe for you.

Sex with a Pacemaker -can people with pacemaker make love

I am sure the one question you will ask amongst others is can we have sex / make love when I have a pacemaker ?

The answer is yes , you can have a happy love life with a pacemaker with a loving , patient partner who understands you need to take your time easing back into it.

You might find it better to make love in the morning when you are not so tired after a long day of work etc.

Allow your self a few minutes to relax after love making before getting up for the day .

If you don't feel up to sex for a while then still spend time cuddling . kissing and being close together as this will help both of you and make it easier for when you are ready to resume lovemaking.

Making love is as good as if not better than ever so go ahead and enjoy your life !

Getting your pacemaker checked

You will need to see the doctor as he  will want to check your pacemaker regularly (about every 3 months). Over time, a pacemaker can stop working properly because:

Its wires get dislodged or broken

Its battery gets weak or fails

Your heart disease progresses

Other devices have disrupted its electrical signaling

To check your pacemaker, your doctor may ask you to come

Pacemaker batteries last between 5 and 15 years (average 6 to 7 years), depending on how active the pacemaker is. Your doctor will replace the generator along with the battery before the battery starts to run down.

Replacing the generator/battery is less-involved surgery than the original
