Free camping sites Australia

FREE CAMPING !! Do you love the freedom of being out in the countryside by a river or elsewhere away from the hustle & bustle of crowds !?

Many people think of free camping is that its all about not wanting to pay for accommodation, being tight with your money rather than pay overnight fees.

However even if I had plenty of money I would still free camp as how can you compare the freedom of bush camping with being cramped in a caravan park?

There are many really good caravan parks around Australia and there is a need to stay in them at times , however some are a nightmare unlike the one out here away from the cities.

You have to contend with codes to boomgates, sometimes only 1 key for the toilets to share & a long-very long list of rules including being told you have a 10pm curfew & your stuck in a very restricted spot with neighbors so close you can hear them snoring ! True ! & no having a fire either.

My 17 year old was complaining of a 12pm curfew the day before that so when I read it I couldn't stop laughing !

When you decide to travel around Australia make sure you take time to utilize some of our beautiful free camping spots as you explore the countryside here and enjoy nature at its best

.A camping holiday is the best way to see and experience the Australian outback.

The great thing about free camping unlike being in a caravan park is that most sites have plenty of room and you choose how close you are to your neighbours.

You can have a campfire every night, Relax, have a chat while cooking your meal on the fire or toast delicious marshmallows - the perfect camping holiday!

( Do watch out for signs about Fire bans as there are times it is too dangerous so Do think of safety first )

There are many delightful spots by rivers wonderful beach side, riverside and forest campsites where you can camp for free! Some are just for one night ,however there are others you can stay for 24 hours or longer.

Do make sure though that if you see a NO CAMPING sign that you move on to where you will be welcome. These spots are checked for anyone who tries to ignore them.

As you are driving along there will be signs up for rest areas ahead where you can pull over for a cuppa or even stay the night .These are marked out with if they have table/chairs -toilets, some have a BBQ etc.

Make sure if you do stay over that you don't leave any rubbish behind as it makes it worse for others in the future. It doesn't take much to put in your car & there are bins along the roadside.

Try stay at least 2-3 kilometre's out of town or away from caravan parks .

If you are staying in Australia for at least a month then I recommend you buy the Camps 5 book as then you can plan ahead for your stays .

You will get your moneys worth back in a couple of nights !

Some are more inviting than others because of being further of the road or alongside a river which is great in summer especially !

You will find to get a spot you sometimes need to be there by 3,30-4pm at your planned destination otherwise you might have to keep on going as there are a lot of travellers on the road.

However after just missing out on a last spot by a river on our way over we found a nicer one with our own private jetty just 1 kilometer up the road where we had 3 beautiful days of swimming, fishing etc.

I have heard about a really nice spot by Murchison River in WA I am looking forward to checking out soon a few hours north of here.

In some areas they are very strict about where you can camp & this is where the National parks come in handy as they are still normally cheaper than the caravan parks.

It will be worth it to get an yearly pass for the state you are exploring if you are travelling a while as it will save you money on day passes.

Western Australian Park Passes are available from Department of Environment and Conservation offices (DEC), entry points to parks and more than 40 local tourist centres throughout the State.

To buy a Day Entry Pass which gives you entry into one or more parks on any one day.
Fees: $10 per car or $5 concession for up to eight people, $5 for a motorcycle,

You can buy a Holiday Park Pass - Entitles you to unlimited entry to all parks for up to
four weeks.
Fee: $40 per vehicle for up to eight people.

Annual All Parks Pass - Entitles you to unlimited entry to all Western Australian parks for 12 months.
Fee: $80 per vehicle for up to eight people so if you are planning on going to a lot of parks the annual one will save you a lot of money

Swans Crossing--free over night camping australia

If you go North of Sydney near Kew is a lovely spot called Swans Crossing if you want a few days up to a week or more of relaxing, swimming & bush walking at another free over night camping australia site .We spent a lot of time there cooking on the open fire, exploring, catching yabbies, seeing the trapdoor spiders !

I loved the waterhole there very near to our campsite!

Swans Crossing is was one of my favourite camping spots to go with the children (especially before it was too well known) as it is a large camping area in Kerwong State Forest, which has toilets, wood, water and barbecues. It is a large clearing - once dairy paddocks - in the middle of the forest and is particularly suitable for large groups because you can spread out as much as you like

The Kids had plenty of room to run around and ride their bikes, there's a swimming hole adjacent to the campground which we had a lot of fun cooling of in and some beautiful bushwalks along Upsalls Creek to more swimming holes .

campsites where you can have a fire

There are plenty of free campsites where you can have a fire & often they provide the firewood like Swans Crossing NSW !

When it is not high fire danger most National Parks allow fires as well as many free camping spots.

Check out for signs.

Is it safe to free camp in Australia ?

Many people won't try free camping as they are worried about safety .

I would recommend being cautious  of course , however many campers do it every year without problems.

If there are other people around that look a bit suss then move on.

one night camping site australia rate

If you are staying in a National Park the average camping site rate is $7 a person .

At a caravan park it can be between $22- $35 for 2 people per night.

Classic Escapes !

Caravan Parks

There are times when we do need to stay in a caravan park and I can reccomend

Perenjori C/ Park as well as Morawa C/Park if you are travelling north from Perth Inland .

They are both peaceful relaxing parks to stay in.

As we travel I will look out for more to reccomend.

Camping between Geraldton _ Coral Bay

Watch this space as we have places we are looking at trying out that are either free or low price so we will add to this as we go !

We leave here on Wednesday & are hoping to try out camping spots like

Eagle Bluff

Situated 18km from Denham, camping is available on the top of the bluff or down at the nearby lagoon. This site offers excellent bird watching opportunities with Osprey and Sea Eagles often seen in the area. Eagle Bluff is also a popular snorkelling and fishing site.

If you have a place to reccomend then please let me know

Marys Pool WA

Travelling between Fitzroy crossing & Halls creek is a beautiful free camping spot for 24 hours. We drove in there about lunchtime for a coffee break & loved it so much we stayed for 2 days !We were there early enough to have what I thought was the best along the riverfront as we had 2 big trees and a fireplace !

There is a crocodile warning as you enter so we paddled on the water s edge rather than a swim.

We had a pleasant time relaxing , cooking on the open fire etc! If you want to be by the river get there early however there is plenty of room for 70-80 rigs !

Thanks for that. You forgot to mention your own back yard! I've had many fun nights with our staff camping in our back yards like we were kids. Lots of fun!

A distinction should be made between campsites and overnight rest areas. There have been a lot of problems in W.A. with people using sites like Galena Bridge as a campsite when it is only a 24 hour rest area.

Thanks for the visit Marc . I agree in that people should respect rest areas as just that & not camp there . A camp site is like Swans Crossing where you can put your tent up - set up table & chairs etc where a rest stop you sleep in your caravan / camper over night then move on .
